is a great book on the subject by Michael Busby published in 2004.
Semi-spoiler, in the sense I list his opinion of them.
Busby does an
excellent job of reviewing many of the newspaper articles of the time,
as well as researching both the folks who reported their sightings to
the newspapers, as well as - in those rare occasions -
- the names of the
supposed folks IN the airships wherein they made themselves to have been known.
I
agree with the author that there were human-made experimental airships
being flown starting in California in November 1896 and with the "wave"
of sightings ending in Texas in April 1897. He theorizes there were
five and at least 2 or 3 crashed. All human-made.
Of course of the
1,200+ newspaper articles on the subject, many of which Busby analyzes,
some are hogwash, capitalizing for their newspaper audiences on
legitimate sightings, but many articles appear to be authentic and the
people in the stories real people according to census documents and
others. More plausible than an "extraterrestrial" encounter."
